Gavins Point and Midway Swimming Beaches Closed Due to Bacteria

South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks have announced that the Gavins and Midway swimming beaches at Lewis and Clark Recreation Area are closed for routine testing that showed unhealthy levels of bacteria in the water.

District Park Supervisor Shane Bertsch says that the heavy rains and flooding across the area has resulted in elevated levels of contaminants in the water.

Bertsch says that the river is still safe for fishing, and that the concern is ingesting or submerging in the water.

Bertsch says that testing will continue and the beaches will reopen when the water again reaches appropriate levels.
