Status of BID in the Meridian District Up in the Air

A petition circulating the creation of a potential Business Improvement District (BID) in the Meridian District has been delayed.

Business owners in the Meridian District have had a series of meetings regarding a BID in the Meridian District over the last few months.

If established, the district would tax property owners $2.60 per $1,000 of valuation of the property based on the city’s valuation of those properties used specifically for tax purposes, with the goal of raising $100,000 per year to put into projects in the Meridian District.

Meridian District board member Mandi Gause says that they have a petition on the matter that they originally planned to present to the Yankton City Commission on July 1st.

Gause doesn’t see that happening on that date at this time, but the petition does not expire, so they can present that petition to the commission at a later date.

Gause says that the board is weighing its options on how to proceed at this time.
