Schurman Makes First Court Appearance in Infant Death

The suspect in the death of an infant that occurred in Yankton last week made her first court appearance on Friday.

Yankton Police Chief Jason Foote says that first responders were called at approximately 10:57 p.m. on Wednesday of last week to the 700 Block of Capitol Street for an unresponsive infant.

Foote says upon arrival at the scene, the infant was transported to the ER and was later declared deceased.

Jennifer Schurman, 33, faces charges of Second-Degree Manslaughter, Abuse or Cruelty of a Minor, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Contempt.

Schurman is next scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on March 21st at 8:30 a.m. in Yankton.
