Unoccupied Apartment Building in Yankton Collapsed

An apartment building in Yankton that was evacuated last June has partially collapsed.

The building, which is on 500 Douglas Avenue, was evacuated in June of 2023 after City of Yankton staff observed a masonry failure on the northeast corner of the building.

Brad Bies, with the Department of Community and Economic Development, says that there does not appear to be any immediate danger to the traveling public or adjacent properties from the further collapse of the building.

Bies says that the building was unoccupied and the site is secure and fenced.

Bies says that decisions on the next steps will be made by the owner, L&L Holding Company of Blunt, South Dakota.
