Yankton Considers New Holidays for Employees

On Monday night, the Yankton City Commission met to discuss the holidays offered to city employees, with three holidays being considered.

Commissioner Ben Brunick talks about what was asked for at a previous commission meeting…

Since the city recently concluded the collective bargaining agreement with both union that serve Yankton, the AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) and the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police), the timing of this request complicated the issue.

City Attorney, Ross Den Herder, talks about some of the issues with trying to make changes to labor contracts…

The Commission looked at giving Native American Day as a holiday for 2024-2025, then negotiate with the unions, again, but also considered giving each employee an additional personal day that they can take when they choose to.

Brittany Orr, Director of Human Resources for the city, talks about how personal days are easier for her to implement than holidays…

The Commission decided to add one additional personal day to all employees, in lieu of a designated holiday.
