Power Restored After Transformer Fire, Nearly 1,900 Homes and Businesses Impacted

An electrical transformer fire occurred Tuesday morning in the area of 8th and Burleigh.

Yankton Deputy Fire Chief Larry Nickles says that the fire was caused by the failure of a part in a substation transformer.

Nickels says that after the part failed, the oil inside the transformer caught fire.

Northwestern Energy Public Relations Specialist Jo Dee Black says that the fire caused nearly 1,900 customers to lose power and crews were able to restore power after almost two hours.

Black says that the substation transformer will be replaced.

Yankton Firefighters, Yankton Police Department, and Northwestern Public Service were on the scene.
