Apartment Complex Residents in Yankton Evacuated After Building Was Deemed Dangerous

An apartment building at 500 Douglas Avenue in Yankton was evacuated Tuesday evening after City of Yankton staff observed a masonry failure on the northeast corner of the building.

Yankton City Code Enforcement Official Brad Bies said Tuesday that stucco and brick had fallen away exposing what appeared to be a partially compromised exterior wall.

Bies says that the building official issued an abandoned and dangerous building order and closed the building.

Bies says that residents have been relocated with the assistance of the Red Cross and Salvation Army and that efforts are being made to find alternative housing for the displaced residents.

Bies says that an engineering analysis will be needed before the building can be re-occupied and that no timeline for analysis or repair is available at this time.
