The City of Yankton celebrated Arbor Day on Monday, an event that was originally scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed by inclement weather.
City of Yankton Urban Forestry Specialist Lisa Korton says that Arbor Day observes and encourages groups to plant trees.
Korton says that celebrating Arbor Day is a requirement to be a member of the organization “Tree City, USA”, a group that Yankton has been a part of for 39 years.
Korton says that the tree the city chose this year is the Fort McNair Horse Chestnut tree.
The city along with members of the community planted the tree at Westside Park on Monday.
