YFD Responds to Several Fires Thursday

The Yankton Fire Department responded to a large grass fire south of Highway 50 near the boy scout camp Thursday.

Yankton Deputy Fire Chief Larry Nickles says that the cause of the fire was a rekindled pile of debris.

Nickles says that firefighters dealt with visibility issues due to high winds that caused blowing dirt and pushed the fire.

Nickles says that Lesterville, Tabor, Gayville, and Vermillion assisted in helping put out the fire.

Nickles says that there were not any injuries or structural damage caused by the fire and that firefighters were on scene for over five hours.

The Yankton Fire Department was also called to assist the Crofton Fire Department with a fire west of Yankton near Lewis and Clark Lake.

Nickles says that the cause of the fire was a rekindling of a tree pile that was burned back in December.

Nickles says that the land owner said the pile showed no signs of activity before the high winds over the last few days.
