NorthWestern Energy is reporting that customers have been receiving scam calls and texts trying to steal money by threating service disconnection.
Jo Dee Black with NorthWestern says that they have received reports from customers in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Montana.
Black says that the scammers impersonate NorthWestern Energy representatives on the phone and use the company logo in text messages.
Black says that a major red flag to identify a potential spam call is that the caller will immediately demand payment.
Black added that the best thing to do when dealing with a scam phone call is to hang up immediately and to not engage with the scammer.
Black says that NorthWestern is working with industry peers to shut down numbers used by scammers and has reported the activity to the Federal Trade Commission.
