Scotland Man Cited For Burning During Burn Ban

A Scotland man was cited Thursday for defying Yankton County’s burn ban.

Yankton County Chief Deputy Sheriff Michael Rothschadl says that he was notified of a controlled burn at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in a field northeast of Lesterville off of 292nd Street and 436th Avenue.

Rothschadl says 61-year-old Herold Wipf, a farmhand from the Maxwell Colony, was cited for burning during a burn ban.

Rothschadl adds that Wipf was unaware of the burn ban and didn’t call in the controlled burn to dispatch. He says that Wipf was cited for not adhering to Yankton County Ordinance 17, burning during a burn ban.

The amount of Wipf’s citation will now be determined by the Yankton County States Attorney’s Office. The maximum punishment could include up to a ten thousand dollar fine.
