Dry conditions prompted not one but two brush fires in the Yankton area Sunday.
The Yankton Fire Department says firefighters called to two separate fires almost simultaneously on Sunday. They were called to an area on 445th Ave and Hwy 50 for a report of a brush fire with buildings involved. The Cause of the fire was a person burning against the no burning statement issued due to extreme fire conditions. Some vehicles were destroyed and a building received minor damage. The landowner received minor injuries in the fire. The Gayville Fire Department assisted with this fire.
Firefighters were also called to the 4300 block of Deer Boulevard for a brush fire. Lesterville Fire was called and took this call for Yankton due to the first fire. This fire was caused by a controlled burn of a tree pile that had been burned approximately two weeks prior.
Yankton County Emergency Manager Paul Scherschligt encourages everyone to postpone all outdoor burning until conditions are more favorable.
