Yankton Firefighters Battle New Years Day Fire

The Yankton Fire Department battled an early morning fire on New Year’s Day Saturday.

According to Yankton Assistant fire Chief Larry Nickels, firefighters were dispatched just before 1:00 AM early Saturday morning to the City of Yankton Transfer Station/Recycling Center on West 23rd St.

Firefighters battled negative twenty-degree windchills and icing conditions along with encountering heavy smoke. They did locate the fire inside one of the recycling trailers.

With the assist of City of Yankton employees, the trailer was moved away from the building and unloaded where the contents were extinguished.

Nickles says the cause of the fire is unknown, but they do know the fire originated in one of the trailers. Firefighters were on scene for approximately three hours.

Assisting the Yankton Fire Department was City of Yankton Public Works, the Gayville Fire Department, the Yankton Police Department, the Yankton Sheriff’s Office, and the Yankton County Emergency Management Service.
