Springfield Split On Potential Of Dollar General Store

The community of Springfield in southern Bon Homme County is buzzing with questions and concerns on the recent announcement that the Dollar General corporation has made an offer on a tract of city owned land on the outskirts of town.

The Springfield City Finance office confirms with KYNT News that the Dollar General corporation has submitted an offer to purchase the land, but no decision has been made by the city council.

Dollar General Public Information Officer Emma Hall confirms that the Dollar General Corporation is currently in the “due diligence phase” for a new Dollar General location in on the Highway 37 bypass in Springfield. Hall says essentially, that means they are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in Bon Homme County, but have not committed to doing so just yet.

Springfield City Council Member Vance Branton took to Facebook to show his support for the proposed business. He says he is very excited to see a new business come to Springfield and believes a store like Dollar General would be transformative and will hopefully spur new visitors and potential residents who wish to raise their families in Springfield.

On the other side, many residents of Springfield are concerned that, if constructed, Dollar General would take away business from long-time long-established Doug’s Food Center in downtown Springfield.

Regardless of opinion, the Dollar General Corporation doesn’t anticipate making a final decision until early summer of 2022.
