Large Yankton Police Presence Ends Peacefully Sunday

A heavy police presence near the city Cemetery ended peacefully Sunday night.

According to Yankton Police Chief Jason Foote, the Yankton Police Department received information from the Turner County Sheriff’s Office to be on the lookout for a male who had been involved in an assault with a weapon in Turner County.

Foote says Law Enforcement obtained a possible location of the male in the area of the Yankton City Cemetery. The Yankton Police Department responded to the area and established a perimeter.

Foote says upon further investigation, it was determined that the male’s location was at the Day’s Inn Motel. Foote says contact was made with the male and he surrendered peacefully to law enforcement.

Turner County Sheriff Steven Luke confirms with KYNT News that they have charged 45-year-old Steven Brown of Centerville in connection with the case. He is being held on charges including aggravated and simple assault stemming from an incident that happened just outside of Centerville earlier on Sunday.

Assistance in the investigation was provided by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the Yankton County Sheriff’s Office.

Foote encourages the public to remember that when Law Enforcement has a large scene such as this one, to please refrain from entering the area.
