The Missouri River Cleanup event will not occur again this year.
The annual event where volunteers remove tons of trash from the Missouri River banks across the Yankton area was canceled last year due to COVID. In 2019, it was canceled due to area flooding.
Missouri River Regional Lead Park Service Ranger Dugan Smith says this year’s event was postponed from this past May to September, but it will once again need to be canceled…
Smith adds that unfortunately, a lot of factors are playing into the event cancelation…
The cleanup has removed over one hundred ten tons of garbage, wood, metal, tires and other debris from the local stretch of the river since being started eighteen years ago.
