Yankton emergency crews were called out during the 5 PM hour Friday to a fatal car-semi accident on North Highway 81.
Yankton Deputy Fire Chief Larry Nickles says the crash also started a fire.
The 19-year-old female driver of the car was Abigail Gilkerson who died in the accident, while the 64-year-old male driver of the truck went to the hospital with minor injuries. Nickles says Highway 81 was blocked for a couple hours and crews were on the scene for nearly three hours.
A funeral service for Abigail Gilkerson will be held at 2 PM Friday March 26 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory in Yankton..
Responding to the scene were the Yankton Fire Department, Irene Firefighters, Yankton County Ambulance, Yankton County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management, along with South Dakota Highway Patrol and the State Department of Transportation.
