At Monday’s meeting of the Yankton City Commission, the board will consider the hiring of a consultant to assist local government in preparing for the legalization of marijuana in our state.
City Manager Amy Leon says the proposal is to hire former City Manager Bill Effting who worked with the Colorado Municipal League during that state’s legalization process.
Leon says numerous issues will be involved in cannabis legalization including zoning and jurisdictional regulations.
The measure approved by voters legalizing possession of marijuana by adults is currently being challenged in the courts and Leon says no matter how the courts rule, city government needs to be prepared.
The Yankton City Commission meets Monday at 7 PM.
