The selection of Justice Steven Jensen to serve as the next chief justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court has met with the approval of one District 18 legislator who has also worked as an attorney for many years.

District 18 Representative Mike Stevens says Chief Justice Jensen formerly served as a judge in South Dakota’s First Circuit which includes Yankton County.

Stevens says the best judges are highly intelligent and take their duties very seriously.

Stevens says compared with judges in neighboring states, South Dakota justices receive significantly lower salary.

Justice Steven Jensen replaced Chief Justice David Gilbertson who served as chief justice since 2001, the longest tenure for a chief justice in South Dakota history.
