The approval by South Dakota voters of a ballot measure legalizing the possession and use of marijuana by adults has local governments looking towards state government for guidance on how future regulations on cannabis will be administered.
City Manager Amy Leon says local governments have a financial interest in how licensing for dispensaries and shops is set up.
Leon says City Attorney Ross Den Herder and Yankton Chief Of Police John Harris are serving on a committee which is exploring how marijuana-related issues have been addressed in other municipalities.
Leon says it is unlikely that questions surrounding regulations on South Dakota’s future marijuana industry will be completely answered in the 2021 legislative session.
The ballot measure which legalized the use and possession of marijuana by South Dakota adults is currently being challenged in court.
