While possible construction of a new wastewater treatment plant for the community of Yankton is years into the future, the first steps in that direction were taken with last night’s approval by the Yankton City Commission of a contract with the engineering firm of HDR.
City Manager Amy Leon says the first priority is to do enough repair work to keep the wastewater plant operating to provide the time needed to develop a plan for the future.
Leon says long-term planning for a future facility will have to wait.
Leon says there is no doubt that rate increases for residents will accompany the wastewater plant project.
Total cost estimate of the HDR engineering contract is just over one-point-eight million dollars which is being funded through a state revolving loan fund.
