District 18 Lawmakers On Education

With less than a month to go before lawmakers convene in Pierre, the Yankton School Board heard from the District 18 delegation Monday night regarding their expectations for the 2021 South Dakota Legislative session.

Representative Ryan Cwach says Governor Noem has proposed a two-point-four percent increase for K-through-12th grade education and he expects there will be an effort to move that number higher.

Senator-Elect Jean Hunhoff says going into the legislative session, she needs to know statistics related to the impact of COVID 19 such as the numbers of students who were taught online, sought education elsewhere or who dropped out of school completely.

Representative Mike Stevens says in spite of the COVID 19 pandemic, it’s important for local community leaders to have a presence in Pierre.

The 2021 session of the South Dakota Legislature convenes at noon on January 12th.
