Area COVID-19 Update for 12/4

The state of South Dakota passed the one-thousand mark in deaths related to the coronavirus on Thursday.  The State Department of Health confirmed 38 deaths yesterday, bringing the statewide total up to 1,033 since the pandemic began.  There have been 184 deaths statewide in the seven days since Thanksgiving.

Active cases in South Dakota now total 15,747 and there are 538 people currently hospitalized with the virus.

Yankton County recorded one new death in yesterday’s report and now has 11 since the pandemic started.  There were 41 new positive tests in Yankton County on Thursday and the number of active cases jumped up to 483.

The South Dakota Department of Health website noted that 21 beds at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton are occupied by COVID-19 patients, there are six people in the Intensive Care Unit and two are on ventilators.

The state of Nebraska has a total of 1,159 deaths from COVID-19 after 31 more fatalities were confirmed on Thursday.  Cedar County reported its third fatality yesterday from the coronavirus, but their active case count dropped to 115 which is the lowest total in the past two weeks.
