LOCAL SPORTS 3-1-23

The SoDak 16 has officially been set for Class AA boys basketball, and the Yankton Bucks will play in front of their home fans for one last time this season.

            The Bucks will host Aberdeen Central at 2:00 PM on Saturday inside the Summit Activities center, with a place in the state tournament on the line. Coverage on KYNT and KYNTV will begin at 1:30, with Bryce Ladwig on the call.

            The 2023 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships begin tomorrow in Brookings, and the Mount Marty Lancers will be represented during the events.

            For the MMU men, Marcus Jnoffin (60m dash), Donovan Breckenridge (200m dash, 400m dash), Nathan Simons (600 m run), Jonathan Fuselier (60m hurdles), Mason Scleis (heptathlon), Seth Wiebelhaus (heptathlon), and the Lancers 4x400m relay team (Donovan Breckenridge, Mason Scleis, Seth Wiebelhaus, Nathan Simons, Deontae Howard, Nathaniel Kropuenske, Michael Beyer, and  Jonathan Fuselier) will all take part in the event.

            For the Lancer women, Calli Davis (400m dash), Ashinee George (60m hurdles), Grace Rippen (pole vault), and the MMU 4x400m relay team (Tianna Bumbaca-Kuehl, Elianna Clark, Abrielle Nelson, Calli Davis, Alexis Even, Josey Wahlstrom, Isabelle Hardmyer, and Ashinee George) have all qualified for the event.

            Day one of the events is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM tomorrow in Brookings, South Dakota.

            The Yankton Quarterback Club will host their weekly meeting today at JoDeans in Yankton. Mount Marty coaches ZenaRae Ross, Kayla Bryant and Josh Teichroew (Ty-Crow) are this week’s featured guest speakers. Today’s meeting will begin at 12:00 PM noon.

            The regional semifinals have been set in classes A and B for South Dakota high school boys basketball, and multiple area teams are looking to move on to the regional finals.

            In Class A region 4, the #7 seed Vermillion will meet #3 Elk Point Jefferson on Friday night following their 51-47 victory over Lennox last night.

            In Class B region 4, #3 seeded Irene-Wakonda will face #2 Freeman Academy-Marion at 7:00 PM Friday night. Irene-Wakonda advanced to the semi-finals with a 62-49 victory over Alcester-Hudson last night.

            Also in Class B region 4, #5 Scotland upset #4 Centerville last night 57-54, and will square off with #1 Viborg-Hurley in the semi final round on Friday at 7:00 PM.

The Nebraska high school girls basketball state tournament officially begins this week, for three area teams who are looking to capture a state title.

In Class D1, #3 seeded Cedar Catholic will play Johnson-Brock at 7:45 PM this evening. Coverage for this game can be found on Riverfront Sports and Current 94.3 beginning at 7:15. Scott Ulrich will be on the call.

In Class C2, top seeded Crofton will meet #8 Cross County at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning.

In Class D2, # 6 seeded Wynot will face off with the #3 seed St. Mary’s at 7:00 PM Thursday night.

All games will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Nebraska high school boys basketball district finals have come and gone for a pair of area high schools who have both punched their tickets to the state tournament in Lincoln.

In the Class D2-3 district final, the Wynot Blue Devils defeated Hay Springs 79-27 on Monday night to qualify for the state tournament.

In Class C2-4, the Cedar Catholic Trojans defeated the Yutan Chieftains 52-40 to advance to the state tournament.

All state tournament games will be played in Lincoln, Nebraska.
