LOCAL SPORTS 1-16-23

The Mount Marty Lancers men’s and women’s basketball teams made the trip to Mitchell South Dakota last night to take on Dakota Wesleyan, and the men’s game went down to the very last second as Cole Bowen hit the game winner for the Lancers.

            Tehl Tanner broke down how the women’s game shook out, as well as the events of the men’s game that surrounded the final.

            The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles basketball squads also took to the hardwood this weekend as they traveled to Sioux Falls on Saturday to take on O’Gorman. The Gazelles would fall 64 to 29 to the Knights, while the Bucks would take a 55 to 52 overtime victory off of a half-court buzzer beater from Yankton senior Rugby Ryken.

            Next up for the Gazelles is a home game on Tuesday night as they welcome Sioux Falls Jefferson to the Summit Activities Center, while the Bucks will return to Sioux Falls on the same night to take on the #1 team in Class AA, the Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers.

KYNT and KYNTV will have live coverage of the Bucks-Cavaliers matchup in Sioux Falls beginning at 6:30 PM Tuesday night, with tip-off set for 7:00. Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

The Yankton Gazelles Gymnastics squad participated in an Invitational in Huron last Friday. The Gazelles took 3rd place out of the 7 teams at the event, with a score of 135.25, with Mackenzie Steinbrecher earning the highest individual all-around score on the team with a 34.2. Steinbrecher’s all-around total was the 8th highest of any athlete at the event.

The Gazelles next meet will be tomorrow night in Vermillion, beginning at 5:30 PM.

The Mount Marty men’s and women’s track and field teams also competed over the weekend, as they hosted the Mount Marty Opener on Saturday.

The Men’s team placed top 5 in 16 separate events during the meet with four individual athletes and two relay teams earning the top spots. Marcus Jnofinn (60m dash), Donovan Breckenridge (400m dash), Cristobal Gonzalez (1 mile run), and Mason Schleis (pole vault) all took 1st place in their events, while the 4 by 400 meter, and 4 by 800 meter relay teams also took the top spots.

On the women’s side, Lancers placed in the top 5 across 17 events, with 4 individuals and one relay team earning first place finishes. Calli Davis earned two 1st place finishes (200m dash and 400m dash), while Andrea Sucha (high jump), Gracie Rippen (pole vault), Lexa Burtzlaff (triple jump), and the Lancers 4 by 400 meter relay team also finished at the head of the pack.

The next meet for the Lancers is set for this Friday, January 20th, at the SDSU D2 Open in Brookings, beginning at 1:30 PM.

In Mount Marty volleyball news, the Lancers announced the signing of outside hitter Adisyn Indahl of Burke high school late last week. Adisyn was selected as first team all-state and named South Dakota Miss Volleyball for her senior campaign, and she recorded over 500 kills and 500 digs during her high school career.

The South Dakota Coyotes and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits renewed their rivalry over the weekend as both universities faced off in men’s and women’s basketball.

The SDSU women took a 118 to 59 victory over USD in Frost Arena Saturday afternoon, as six different Jackrabbits cracked double digits, led by Paiton Burckhard who put up 22 points and 8 rebounds. Carley Duffney was the leading scorer for the Coyotes as she had 14 points.

 The Jackrabbit men also took down the Coyotes, in Vermillion, 82 to 64. Matt Dentlinger led the charge as he had 26 points and 8 rebounds. Yankton native Matthew Mors started his 5th game of the season for SDSU, contributing 10 points and 2 blocks in the victory.

Next up for the Jackrabbit men and women are the Omaha Mavericks on Thursday. The women will play in Omaha and the men will play at home, both games scheduled to tip off at 7:00 PM.

The Coyotes will return to action Thursday night as well as both the men and women will take on Denver. The Women will make the trip out to Denver, Colorado, while the men will stay home and host the Pioneers inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 7:00 PM central time.
