LOCAL SPORTS WRAP 10-12-21

  • Most teams would have been a deer in the headlights after watching their nearly full match lead slip away late in the second half, but not the Yankton Bucks. The varsity soccer squad displayed the same resilience they have all season to score a late goal with just over 3 minutes left to pull ahead and secure a Class AA Playoff Semi-Final victory over the higher seeded Rapid City Stevens Raiders on the road at Sioux Park Complex in Rapid City yesterday afternoon. The Bucks now have one final hurdle before they can take home a state championship to Yankton, the winner of Sioux Falls Washington and Sioux Falls O’Gorman in a late afternoon contest today. While the opponent is unknown, the site and championship game time is set. The game will immediately follow the Class AA Girls Championship match at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls around 7pm this Saturday.
  • The latest South Dakota High School Football Media Polls were released yesterday evening. The Yankton Bucks remain seated in the #4 spot for the third straight week, and all other teams remain in the same spot in Class 11AA as well. Watertown #5, Brookings #3, Pierre #2 and Tea Area #1. Some other area teams have seen their names moved up and down the media poll, Class A’s Vermillion moved up from #4 to #3 after their victory over West Central. Gayville-Volin remains firm in the #2 spot in Class 9B, behind only Avon.
  • The South Dakota High School Volleyball Media Polls were released yesterday as well. Undefeated Sioux Falls Washington remains atop the Class AA poll. Sioux Falls Christian is on top of the Class A poll, while Bridgewater-Emery sits on top of the Class B poll, ahead of both #2 Warner and #3 Northwestern. It has been years since Northwestern has been seated this low in the media poll for this many consecutive weeks.
  • The Yankton Cross Country squad gets prepared for the Huron Invitational this Thursday at Broadland Creek Golf Course. Varsity competition begins at 4pm.
