The Yankton County Sheriff’s Department has recently received reports of citizens receiving phone calls and text messages from scammers claiming they have active warrants for their arrest.
In many cases, the scammers instruct individuals to turn themselves in at their local Sheriff’s Department. They will often remain on the phone with the victim the entire time while they drive to or arrive at the Sheriff’s Office. Once the person arrives, the scammer then directs them to leave and obtain money from a Walmart, convenience store, or other business to supposedly resolve the warrant.
These scammers may provide fake case numbers, civil process numbers, or other fraudulent information to make their story sound legitimate.
The Yankton County Sheriff’s Department is reminding people that law enforcement agencies do not call or text demanding money.
They’re advising anyone who receives a suspicious call or text to hang up immediately and contact local law enforcement.
