On Friday night, about 75 members of the Yankton community gathered at the obelisk in the center of Fantle Memorial Park for a candle-light vigil to show support for a man facing deportation.
Emily Pinkelman, the organizer of the vigil, says Nate Samudzi (Sam-dews-ee) has lived in the Yankton and Vermillion areas for the better part of 26 years and deserves to stay here…
Samudzi was detained when he checked in at the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) office in Sioux Fall because there is an order of removal from an earlier case. He was then transferred to Minneapolis for a flight to Zimbabwe before a judge issued a temporary restraining order, halting his deportation for the moment.
Pinkelman says that talking to all levels of elected officials is key to helping people in situations like this…
