The Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Plains – Yankton Club announced back in April that they lost $200,000 in an AI-powered cyberattack.
Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Plains CEO, Jody Hernandez, says in the months since, the Yankton Police Department has been able to recover $80,000 of the original amount stolen.
Hernandez says they also received a $100,000 donation from a Vermillion resident to help replenish the lost funds.
Hernandez says the Boys and Girls Club has also taken several steps with cybersecurity to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again.
Hernandez says the authorities believe the scam was an overseas operation.
