A pair of Yankton Softball teams earned top finishes at the Northern Nationals this past weekend in Sioux Falls.
The Fury Lancers 12u took the top spot in the 12u ‘B’ Division, defeating DC Styx of Layton, Utah, in the championship game 8-6.
Fury Lancers 15u placed second in the 16u ‘B’ Division, falling to Williston Boom (ND) 15-13 in a high-scoring finale.
Five South Dakota Coyotes were named Preseason All-Missouri Valley Football Conference by Phil Steele on Monday.
Charles Pierre Jr (Running Back), Brayden White (Returner), Gabe Hardman (Linebacker), and RJ Stewart (Defensive Back) all earned a spot on the first team, with Chris Dixon (Defensive Line) named to the second team.
The preseason all-conference recognition is another preseason accolade for returning running back Charles Pierre Jr, as he has also been named Second Team Preseason All-American by FCS Football Central and Phil Steele, while also being named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List and the Shriners Children’s East-West Bowl Watch List.
The South Dakota State Jackrabbits and the South Dakota Coyotes are both ranked in the top-15 of the FCS Stats Perform Preseason Football Poll.
The Jackrabbits are the highest-ranked team in the Missouri Valley, sitting 3rd behind #1 Montana State and #2 Montana.
The Coyotes are just outside the top ten, ranking 12th as the 5th highest MVFC team, just behind #10 North Dakota.
Six members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference were selected in total. Joining USD and SDSU are Illinois State (#4), Youngstown State (#9), North Dakota (#10), and Southern Illinois (#16).
The South Dakota Amateur Baseball Class ‘A’ and ‘B’ State Tournaments begin this week, with several South Central League teams looking to earn a state championship.
The Yankton Lakers will serve as the opening weekend hosts for the Class A Tournament. They will face Harrisburg in their first game on Friday at 8:00 PM.
The Class B Tournament begins tomorrow, with all games held in Mitchell. Representing the South Central League, Crofton will face Alexandria, Wynot will face Lake Norden, and Lesterville will take on Garretson on August 6th, while Tabor will play Mount Vernon on August 7th.
