An AI cyberattack on the Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Plains’ Yankton Club resulted in a loss of $200,000.
According to Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Plains CEO, Jody Hernandez, the cyberattackers acquired login information using tactics including AI-voice cloning, spoofing phone numbers and manipulating transaction details.
The affected funds came from a reserve account used for things like building maintenance and emergency needs of the Yankton Club. It doesn’t include any recent donations.
Hernandez says the Boys and Girls Club was made aware of the theft on May 1st after the person or group made a second attempt to withdraw funds, and immediately contacted law enforcement.
Yankton Police Chief, Jason Foote, says the Yankton Police Department is working with the FBI on the matter.
The incident remains under investigation.
