The University of South Dakota Football program will head into their 2026 campaign with their third head coach in as many years, as Matt Vitzhum (Vit-zum) has been named the 32nd head coach of Coyote Football following the departure of Travis Johansen to Rutgers after one season.
Vitzhum has spent the past two seasons on staff with the Coyotes as an assistant coach, helping lead USD to FCS Quarterfinal appearances in both seasons.
After originally serving as wide receivers coach, Vitzhum was promoted to Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach last season.
As the quarterbacks coach, he worked directly with one of the best Coyote quarterbacks in program history, Aidan Bouman, in 2025. For the third-straight season, Bouman threw for 2,000+ yards with a brand-new receiving core, plus throwing for a career-best 26 touchdown passes.
Vitzhum steps into the top job with over a decade of experience as a coach that has spanned all three NCAA Divisions.
