Local Sports 3-7-24

The Great Plains Athletic Conference announced their All-Conference teams for Men’s and Women’s Basketball Wednesday morning, with Cole Bowen, Sidney Thue, and Jadyn Jensen earning honorable mentions for Mount Marty.

Cole Bowen, the lone honoree for the Lancer men, averaged a team-high 13.7 points per game, shooting 49.3% from the field and 35.7% from beyond the arc. Bowen also averaged 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

Sidney Thue averaged 9.6 points per game, 2nd most for the Lancer women, on 48.2% shooting from the field. Thue also tallied 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and just under a block per game.

Jadyn Jensen, a freshman for the Lancer women, averaged 9.5 points and a team-high 5 rebounds per game last season. Jensen added 1.3 assists and just under a steal per game as well.

The GPAC Men’s and Women’s All-Conference teams were selected by the league’s head coaches.

Mount Marty Baseball returns to the diamond today for a pair of games in Orlando, Florida against St. Thomas and Roosevelt University.

The Lancers have gone 4 and 1 so far on their Florida trip, including a 6 to 2 win over the #15 team in the country Ave Maria on Tuesday. MMU’s overall record is 13 and 4.

The Lancers will face St. Thomas at 9:00 AM, and Roosevelt at 12:15 PM 

Mount Marty Softball wrapped up their Florida trip yesterday, dropping a pair of games to Lawrence Tech, 6 to 3, and Saint Thomas, 5 to 0.

Olivia Valdez and Autumn Porter each went 2 for 3 against Lawrence Tech, with Valdez adding 2 RBI and a run scored. MMU was held to just 5 hits in their loss to Saint Thomas.

The Lancers are back in South Dakota for their next set of games on March 10th, taking on Dakota State in Madison in a doubleheader.

Cedar Catholic Boys Basketball had their season come to an end yesterday in the opening round of the Class C2 State Tournament, falling to Lincoln Lutheran 67 to 50.

Alex Kuehn led the Trojans with 16 points, followed closely by Nolan Becker with 15. Jaymison Cattau added 11. Cedar Catholic ends the season with a 19 and 7 overall record.

Wynot Boys Basketball defeated St. Mary’s 51 to 23 yesterday in the opening round of the Class D2 State Tournament.

Dylan Heine tallied a game-high 16 points in the win, followed by Carson Wieseler with 9. Wynot will play #1-seeded Shelton on Friday in the semifinals.

The South Dakota High School Girls Basketball State Tournament for Class AA, A, and B all begin today across the state, and the #4 seeded Vermillion Tanagers will take on #5 Mahpíya Lúta at 1:45 PM in Brookings.

With the Class A tournament in Brookings, The Class AA tournament will be held in Sioux Falls, and Class B will be played in Rapid City. Full Brackets for each class are listed below.

The Summit League Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments begin tomorrow at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.

South Dakota State occupies the #1 seed in both tournaments, while South Dakota is #4 in the women’s and #9 in the men’s.
