Local Sports 1-2-24

The Yankton Bucks picked up their first win of the season over the weekend as they defeated Brookings 52 to 47.

Landon Potts and Tucker Gilmore each had 16 points on the night, and the two linked up late in the game to put the finishing touch on the Bucks’s victory.

Potts would be named game MVP as he added 9-assists and 4-rebounds. Gilmore added 9-boards of his own in the win.

The Bucks return to the hardwood tonight as they host the Huron Tigers inside the Summit Activities Center. The Bucks will unveil their 2023 State Championship Banner prior to the scheduled 7:00 PM tip-off. Pregame coverage on KYNT and KYNTV begins at 6:30. Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

Yankton Gazelles Basketball are now 2 and 4 on the year, following their 53 to 46 loss to Brookings on Saturday.

Claire Tereshinski scored a team-high 19 points for the Gazelles. Macy Drotzmann was 2nd in scoring with 16 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.

The Gazelles are off until this Friday night when they take on the Mitchell Kernels inside the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Mount Marty Men’s Basketball punctuated their weekend in Bellevue, Nebraska with an 82 to 80 win over Haskell Indian Nations University on Saturday.

The Lancers went 2 and 0 over the two-day event. In their win on Saturday, Tash Lunday posted an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double, leading the team in both categories. Rugby Ryken added 15 points of his own, while Cole Bowen, 13, Angook Akot (A-nook A-cot), 12, and Jared Lopez, 10, also cracked double-digits in points for MMU.

The Lancers return to action on Saturday with a Men’s and Women’s doubleheader against Northwestern inside Cimpl Arena.

The Yankton QB Club will return at noon tomorrow as they restart their weekly meetings at the River Rock Event Center in Yankton. Tomorrow’s featured guest speakers will be Yankton High School AD Ryan Mors and Mount Marty University AD Andy Bernatow.

South Dakota Men’s Basketball fell to 1 and 1 in conference play on New Year’s Eve, as they were defeated by Omaha 67 to 51.

Lahat Thioune (La-hot Toon) led the Yotes in scoring and rebounding, posting a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double. Kaleb Stewart tied for the team-high in points with 12 of his own.

USD will take on Eastern Washington tomorrow night in what will open the Big Sky-Summit Challenge between the two conferences. Tip-off from Vermillion is set for 7:00 PM.

South Dakota Women’s Basketball star Grace Larkins scored her 1,000 career points for the Coyotes, helping USD secure a 77 to 71 overtime win over Omaha.

Larkins led the Coyotes in the win, as she had 22 points and 11 rebounds. Kendall Holmes and Tori DePerry also cracked double figures in scoring, as Holmes had 18 and DePerry ended with 12.

USD will be on the road tomorrow night as they open the Big Sky-Summit Challenge with a game against Montana. The tip-off is slated for 8:00 PM.

South Dakota State Men’s Basketball opened up Summit League play on Sunday with an 80 to 61 win over North Dakota.

The Jacks had two players score 20+ points in the win, as Zeke Mayo led with 25, followed by William Kyle III with 20. Mayo also led in rebounds with 7 and assists with 4.

SDSU will be on the road tomorrow night as they take on Weber (Wee-ber) State. The tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM.

South Dakota State Women’s Basketball are 1 and 0 in conference play, following their 74 to 53 win over North Dakota on New Year’s Eve.

Madison Mathiowetz (Math-o-witz) led the Jacks in scoring with 18 points on the night, while Brooklyn Meyer secured a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

SDSU will open the Big Sky-Summit Challenge tomorrow night with a game against Northern Arizona at 7:00 PM.
