LOCAL SPORTS 11-15-23

Mount Marty Men’s and Women’s Basketball will be on the road tonight, as they open GPAC play with a double header against Dordt in Sioux Center, Iowa.

            The women will play first at 6:00 PM with the men’s game to follow. Pregame coverage on KYNT begins at 5:30. Tehl Tanner will be on the call.

            Mount Marty Volleyball had three athletes honored by the GPAC yesterday, as Sophomore outside hitter Julia Weber was named 2nd team all conference, with seniors Ally Whitmire and Ivy Mines being listed as honorable mentions.

            Weber led the Lancers in kills this season with 434, adding 206 digs, 33 blocks, and 16 service aces to her stat sheet as well. Whitmire led the team in assists this year as the Lancer setter, posting a total of 1,055, as well as 25 service aces. Mine, a defensive specialist, had 382 digs and 20 service aces.

            The Lancers ended 2023 with a 10 and 21 record, their highest win total since 2014.

Yankton Gazelles Outside Hitter Macy Drotzmann has been selected as a member of the ESD All-Conference Team following her 2023 campaign.

            Drotzmann, a senior for YHS, led the team in kills this season, as the Gazelles finished the year with 12 and 15 record as the #14 team in the SoDak 16, before being eliminated from the postseason by #3 Sioux Falls Washington.

            Drotzmann will continue her volleyball career in Yankton, as she announced her commitment to Mount Marty University earlier this year.

            The Yankton Quarterback Club will host their weekly meeting today at 12:00 PM noon at the River Rock Event Center in Yankton. This week’s featured guest speaker will be Dakota State athletic director Jeff Dittman.

            The South Dakota High School Volleyball State Tournament officially begins tomorrow in Rapid City for Classes AA, A, and B, and the Gayville-Volin Raiders will compete in the Class B Tournament for the first time in school history.

            The Raiders entered the SoDak 16 as the #14 seed, and would upset #3 Faith to earn a spot in the State Tournament. Now reseeded as the #8 seed, The Raiders will take on #1 seed Warner, who is undefeated on the year. That opening round game will begin at noon central, 11:00 AM Mountain in Rapid City tomorrow.

            USD Men’s Basketball suffered their first loss of the season last night, as they were defeated by DePaul, 72 to 60.

            Lahat Thioune (La-hot Toon) posted his second straight double-double in the loss, recording 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Coyotes. Kaleb Stewart was 2nd in scoring with 15.

            USD will be in Glendale, Arizona on Friday for their next game, as they open the Arizona Tip-Off against Virginia Military Institute.

            USD Women’s Basketball moved to 2 and 1 on the year, as they topped Northern Colorado last night 72 to 59.

            Grace Larkins led the charge for the Coyotes, tallying 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists to lead the team in all three categories.

            The Coyotes travel to the Bahamas for their next set of games, as they take on DePaul on Saturday to open the Battle 4 Atlantis.

            SDSU Women’s Basketball fell to 1 and 1 last night, as Wisconsin scored at the buzzer to defeat the Jackrabbits 66 to 64.

            Brooklyn Meyer posted a 19 point, 11 rebound double-double in the loss, adding a team high 5 blocks to her stat sheet as well.

            SDSU will be on the road for their next game, as they take on UT Martin on Saturday.
