LOCAL SPORTS 10-4-23

The Yankton Bucks soccer team advanced to the second round of the class AA state tournament last night following their 7 to 0 win over Brookings.

            The Bucks would score two quick goals early in the first half from a pair of senior captains. Lance Dannenbring scored the first with Simon Schulz (Schultz) capping off the first half scoring as he finished off a corner kick.

            A two-hour rain delay late in the first half would bring the action to a halt, but out of that delay the Bucks would score five more times in the 2nd half, led by a pair of long range free kicks from Kevin Ortiz.

            The Bucks will travel to Sioux Falls for their 2nd round matchup, as they meet #4 Jefferson on Saturday.

            Yankton Gazelles soccer had their season come to an end last night in the 1st round of the state playoff, as they were defeated by Aberdeen Central 5 to 0. The Gazelles end their 2023 season with a 4, 9, and 2 overall record.

            Yankton Bucks golf finished 7th in the class AA state tournament, which concluded yesterday in Brandon.

            The Bucks shot a two-day total of 637 as a team, led by Parker Riley who took home a medal position, tied for 21st after shooting 154 over two days. Miles Krajewski (Kra-ski) shot a 160 in the event to finish tied for 34th. Rounding out the Bucks scoring were Easton Vellek at 162, Ryker Larson at 167, Elijah Larson at 168, and Kai Cody at 171.

            Watertown claimed the team title shooting 578 as a team. Watertown’s Jake Olson won the individual title as well, his second state title in three years.

            Mount Marty men’s tennis were on the road against Concordia University yesterday, as they defeated the Bulldogs 6 to 1.

             Alexander Makarov, Jose Andrade, Ignacio Gomez, and Marcos Moreno each took singles wins for the Lancers, while the duos of Makarov and Gonzale Medina, as well as Andrade and Alejandro Polo won in doubles play.

            The Lancers are next scheduled to compete on October 12th.

            Yankton Gazelles tennis open the class AA state tournament tomorrow. This year’s tournament will be held at McKennan Park in Sioux Falls, beginning at 8:00 AM.

            Mount Marty men’s and women’s soccer will be on the road this evening as they take on the Dordt Defenders in Sioux Center, Iowa. The men play first at 5:00 PM, with the women’s game scheduled for 7:15.

            Yankton Gazelles volleyball will be on the road tomorrow for a match against Brandon Valley. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

            Yankton competitive cheer and dance will return to action tomorrow night, as they compete in an Invitational in Mitchell. Events will be held at the Corn Palace beginning at 5:00 PM.

            The Yankton Quarterback Club will host their weekly meeting today at noon at the River Rock Event Center in Yankton. This week’s featured guest speaker will be Northwestern Red Raiders head football coach Matt McCarty.
