LOCAL SPORTS 9-6-23

The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles soccer teams both drew with Brandon Valley in their double header yesterday afternoon.

            The Gazelles game ended 0-0 after 80 minutes of play, while the Bucks would play to a 1-1 draw with the Lynx. Christian Pacheco scored the lone goal of the match for Yankton. Jack Pedersen assisted Pacheco on the play.

            The Bucks and Gazelles return to action tomorrow afternoon, as they host Brookings for a double header at Crane-Youngworth Field. First kick is set for 4:00 PM, with pregame at 3:30 on KYNT and KYNTV. Brayden Butler will be on the call.

            The Yankton Gazelles volleyball team were swept in straight sets last night, as they fell to Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

            Macy Drotzmann led the Gazelles attack with 6 kills, followed by Camille McDermott who posted 4 kills and 9 assists in the match.

            Yankton’s next match will be Friday night at the Summit Activities Center against Sioux Falls Washington. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.

            The Mount Marty Lancers will play their first home volleyball match of the season tonight, as they host Doane at the Cimpl Arena in Yankton.

            The Lancers enter the contest having already matched last season’s win total, as they open GPAC play against the Tigers.

            First serve is scheduled for 7:30 PM, with pregame coverage beginning at 7:00 on KYNT and KYNTV. Tehl Tanner will be on the call.

            A new set of class 11-AA football media polls were released yesterday, and Yankton remained 3rd on the list behind Tea, and 1st place Pierre. Watertown, Yankton’s opponent this week, are currently 4th, with Sturgis rounding out the top-5. Spearfish and Brookings were both receiving votes.

            Mount Marty men’s golf are 13th following yesterday’s opening two rounds of the Blue River Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska.

            The Lancers shot a two-round total of 637, as Bennett Cassens and Ted Bengston are the highest Lancers on the leaderboard, both tied for 40th individually.

            The third and final round of the Blue River Classic will take place today.

Mount Marty women’s golf will begin the two-day Siouxland invite today, with day one of the competition taking place in Sioux Center, Iowa, and day two held in Orange City.

The Lancer women are coming off of a third place team finish in their season opener last week.

            Yankton competitive cheer and dance will host their home invitational tomorrow night at the Summit Activities Center in Yankton. Events are scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM.

            Former South Dakota State head football coach John Stiegelmeier announced his retirement following the Jackrabbits national championship in January, but it was announced yesterday that Stiegelmeier would be returning to the university to serve as a senior adviser with the South Dakota State University Foundation.

            Stiegelmeier will officially step into the role on October 2nd, with SDSU stating that the role will focus on relationship building and representing the university at different public events, and that Stiegelmeier will also work closely with the Office of the President, the SDSU Alumni Association and the SDSU Athletics Department.
