LOCAL SPORTS 8-28-23

The Yankton Bucks football team began the year with a 42 to 0 victory over Mitchell last Friday night, as new QB Lucas Kampshoff got his first start for the Bucks. Kampshoff’s first touchdown pass would come in the second quarter, as he found Tucker Gilmore over the middle for a 59 yard touchdown.

            Kampshoff would finish with over 160 yards through the air, as well as three more touchdowns on the ground. Shaylor Platt led the ground game for Yankton, rushing for nearly 140 yards and a TD.

            The Bucks will remain at home for week two, as they host Spearfish at Crane-Youngworth Field this Friday night.

            The Mount Marty Lancers football program opened their third season in program history with a hard fought 28 to 23 victory over Culver Stockton College, capped off with a game sealing interception by Josiah Gaetani (Guy-tawn-ee)

            Isaiah Thompson led the way in the run game, as he ran for 116 yards and a touchdown for the Lancers, with his score being the deciding points in the five point Lancer win. MMU quarterback Ken Gay was 2nd in rushing with 55 yards, while throwing for another 153, and 3 touchdowns.

The Lancers will be at home again this week, as they host Briar Cliff at Crane-Youngworth Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Yankton Gazelles volleyball team finished fifth in the Norfolk Invitational volleyball tournament over the weekend.

Yankton went 1 and 2 during the event, falling to Norfolk and Columbus, while picking up their first win of the season against South Sioux City in a three-set sweep.

The Gazelle, now 1 and 4 on the year, return home tomorrow night, as they host Harrisburg at the Summit Activities Center. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM, pregame coverage on KYNTV begins at 6:30. Brayden Butler will be on the call.

The Mount Marty Lancers volleyball squad are now 4 and 4 on the year, as they lost to Dakota State and Mayville State on Saturday.

Julia Weber recorded 23 kills to lead the Lancers over the course of the two matches. Ally Whitmire tallied 46 total assists on the day, as she brings her season total to 268, which places her 8th in the NAIA.

The Lancers will return to the court on Friday for a pair of matches against Tabor College and William Penn University, taking place in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles soccer teams swept Spearfish on Saturday, as both teams went undefeated out west following wins over Douglas on Friday.

The Bucks defeated Spearfish 4 to 1, avenging their loss in last year’s state playoffs. Anthony Alfonso Acosta grabbed a brace with a pair of goals in the win. The Gazelles shutout the Spartans 2 to 0 in their matchup, as Josslyn Elwood and Chloe Blom both scored for Yankton.

The Bucks and Gazelles will be in action again on Thursday, as they’ll be on the road for a double header against O’Gorman.

The Mount Marty men’s soccer team are 0, 1, and 1 to start the year, following a 3 to 4 loss to Hamline on Friday, and a scoreless draw with Crown College on Saturday.

The Lancers men’s team will take on Graceland in their next contest on Wednesday.

The Mount Marty Lancers women’s soccer team will play their first game of the season today, as they are on the road against York University. Kickoff from York, Nebraska is set for 6:00 PM.

The Yankton Gazelles tennis team wrapped up the Brookings Jamboree on Saturday, as they defeated Aberdeen Roncalli 6 to 2, and tied with Huron 3 to 3.

Nora and Sabrina Krajewski (Kra-ski) went undefeated on the day, as each went 2 and 0 in singles play, while also going 2 and 0 as duos partners.

The Gazelles will host a triangular tomorrow against Brandon Valley and O’Gorman, beginning at 11:00 AM.

The Yankton Bucks golf team will travel to Mitchell tomorrow afternoon, as they battle the Kernels in the Marchand Cup. Tee time is set for 2:00 PM at Lake View Golf Course.
