LOCAL SPORTS 8-22-23

The Yankton Gazelles volleyball team will play their first match of the season this evening, as they host O’Gorman at the Summit Activities Center.

            Tonight’s contest will be the first under new head coach Tayler Stacey, who takes the reins of a team that ended last season 6 and 20.

            First serve between Yankton and O’Gorman is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Coverage of tonight’s match will be streamed on KYNTV beginning at 6:30 PM, Brayden Butler will be on the call.

            The Yankton Bucks golf team are in Pierre this morning, as they’re taking part in an invitational at Pierre Hillsview Golf Course.

            The start time for today’s invitational was pushed back to earlier in the morning due to high temperatures expected this afternoon. Tee time is now set for 9:00 AM.

            A new class 11-AA media poll was released yesterday, as the top-5 remains the same ahead of this week’s season opener.

            Yankton is still in third in the polls, trailing Tea in second and defending champions Pierre in 1st. Brookings are 4th in the polls with Aberdeen Central rounding out the top-5.

            Two other area teams were listed in yesterday’s he polls as Bon Homme maintained their 5th place spot in 9-AA, while Avon received votes in 9-B.

            The class AA volleyball media polls were released yesterday, as Harrisburg were picked atop the standings heading into the season.

Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Jefferson, O’Gorman, and Sioux Falls Lincoln filled out the top-5 in that order, with Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Rapid City Stevens, Pierre, Watertown, and Brandon Valley all receiving votes. Yankton did not receive votes in the initial poll.

In other classes across the state, Sioux Falls Christian were picked to finish first in class A, while Warner took the top spot in class B.

The Mount Marty Lancers women’s soccer team will play their first match of the 2023 season tomorrow afternoon, as they hit the road to take on York University. Kickoff from York, Nebraska is set for 4:00 PM.
