The GPAC preseason football polls were released yesterday, and the Mount Marty Lancers sit 9th to begin the year.

            The Lancers, who are entering their third season as a team, won their first three games in program history last year, including two in conference play. At the top of the polls, Northwestern are the preseason favorite, while defending conference champions Morningside are 2nd.

            The Crofton Blue Jays were eliminated for the Class B Amateur Baseball State Tournament last night, as they were defeated by the Larchwood Diamonds 13 to 0.

            Larchwood’s Isaac Horigan threw a no-hitter in the contest to lead the Diamonds to the next round. Micah Linn and Gavin Lorenzen led Larchwood at the plate, as each recorded 4 RBI.

            Tabor and Lesterville will be the next teams to represent the South Central League in the Class B tournament, as both teams play tomorrow night. Lesterville will meet Winner-Colome in their game, while Tabor will match up with Lake Norden.

            The fall season for Yankton High School Athletics officially begins on Friday, as girls tennis, as well as boys and girls soccer will all be in action.

            The Bucks and Gazelles soccer teams will host Sioux Falls Lincoln in a double header at Crane-Youngworth field, beginning with the girls at 4:00 PM. Coverage of both games will be on KYNT and KYNTV starting at 3:30.

            Girls tennis will open their season with a triangular in Pierre, as they face Pierre and Rapid City Central in the event. Yankton’s first duel is set for 1:00 PM.

            Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Jeff Sims was one of thirty-five NCAA quarterbacks to be named to the Davey O’Brien preseason award watch list yesterday afternoon.

            Sims transferred to Lincoln from Georgia Tech in the offseason, and enters this year as one of fourteen active quarterbacks with more than 4,000 yards passing, and 1,000 yards rushing.

            The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback.
