Hannah Nelson of Yankton competed in the Para Swimming World Championships yesterday in Manchester, England, as she finished 7th in the Women’s S10 400m Freestyle. Nelson was able to qualify for the final with a 5th place finish in her heat, in the final itself Nelson posted a time of 4:52.67. Nelson is not scheduled to compete again in the event, but the 2023 Para Swimming World Championships are scheduled to run through August 6th.

            The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles soccer teams are hosting a Youth Soccer Clinic on Saturday at Crane-Youngworth Field in Yankton. Kids ages 5u and up are welcome to take part in the event. Registration for the event begins at 4:15 PM at Crane-Youngworth field, and is $10 per entrant. Food will be provided for the children involved, and the event will be headlined by an intersquad scrimmage by the Bucks and Gazelles. Proceeds from the clinic will be used to assist the Bucks and Gazelles soccer squads with expenses for the upcoming season.

         The South Dakota State Jackrabbits had three players named to the preseason watchlist for the Walter Payton Award, as running back Isaiah Davis, quarterback Mark Gronowski and wide receiver Jaxon Janke (Yon-kee) all made the list. The Walter Payton Award is given to the Offensive Player of the Year at the FCS level each season, this year’s list marks the second straight appearance for Davis and Janke on the preseason watchlist.

            The Tabor Bluebirds of the South Central League will open their 2023 Class B Amateur Baseball State Tournament today, as they square off with Akron at 11:00 AM in Mitchell. Tabor are the first SCL team to play in this year’s Class B tournament, as Crofton, Lesterville, and Menno will also compete over the coming days. The Yankton Tappers are the lone league team in the Class A tournament, as they will play their first game on Friday in Yankton against the Sioux Falls Brewers.

            The 50th Annual Hillcrest Invitational will not take place this weekend, as the event has been pushed to the end of the month due to construction on the new Clubhouse at Hillcrest Golf Course. The event will now run from August 28th thru September 3rd, beginning with the men’s pro qualifier on the 28th. The event is scheduled to return to its traditional time of the first weekend of August in 2024.
