Yankton native Hannah Nelson will be one of fourteen athletes from nine different countries competing today in the Women’s S10 400m Freestyle at the 2023 Para Swimming World Championships in Manchester, England.

            Heat races for Nelson’s event will begin around 9:20 this morning, with the final taking place between 6:00 and 7:00 PM this evening.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference released their preseason poll and All-Conference team yesterday morning. Defending FCS National Champion South Dakota State is atop the standings, as they received 44 of 45 first place votes. SDSU also had 18 players named to the preseason All-Conference team, including a league high 8 on the first team.

            The South Dakota Coyotes are 9th in the preseason polls, and had 8 athletes earn preseason All-Conference nods. Making the first team for USD were linebackers Brock Mogensen and former Cedar Catholic Trojan Stephen Hillis, defensive back Myles Harden, and Carter Bell who made the list as an all-purpose selection. Rounding out the USD selections were Travis Theis (Tice) and Isaac Erbes (Erbiss) on the 2nd team, and Brendan Webb and Dennis Shorter earning honorable mentions.

Former Mount Marty University pitcher Chris Rofe got the start in last night’s Northwoods League All-Star game, representing the Great Plains West Team.

Rofe, who graduated from Mount Marty in the spring, only pitched the opening inning, allowing no hits and no runs during the outing. In his 13 appearances for the Willmar Stingers leading into the All-Star game, Rofe is 5 and 0 with 2 saves, a 1.91 ERA, and 43 strikeouts.

The NWL All-Star game ended 3 to 3 as weather ended the game in the 7th inning.

Tabor Post 183 ended their baseball season in the penultimate game of the 2023 Class B State Tournament, as they fell to Elk Point-Jefferson 8 to 5.

Landon Bares went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI in the loss, while Riley Rothschadl led Tabor in runs scored with 2. Elk Point Jefferson would fall to Dell Rapids in the final game of the tournament, as Dell Rapids captured the Class B State Title.

Tabor ended their season with a 21 to 7 overall record.

Harrisburg Post 45 Gold and Rapid City Post 22 will both represent the state of South Dakota at this week’s Central Plains American Legion Baseball Regional Tournament beginning today in Rapid City.

Harrisburg qualified for the regional as the South Dakota State Champion, while Rapid City earned an automatic bid as the host team. Harrisburg is currently playing St. Michael, Minnesota, while Rapid City will close out day one of the event against Elkhorn-Waterloo, Nebraska at 6:15.
