Yankton Post 12 fell to Harrisburg Gold last night 16 to 4 in the second round of the 2023 American Legion State Baseball Tournament.

            Harrisburg jumped out to a 5 to 0 lead after the first inning, and never looked back en route to the 12-run victory. Rugby Ryken went 2 for 3 with a run scored for Yankton, while Mac Ryken tallied 2 RBI at the plate, as Yankton fell into the elimination bracket.

            Yankton will meet Rapid City Post 22 at 5:00 PM this afternoon, with the losing team being eliminated from the tournament. Pregame coverage on KYNT and KYNTV begins at 4:30.

  • #1 Sioux Falls East defeated #4 Brookings 14 to 4.
  • #2 Harrisburg Gold defeated #3 Yankton 16 to 4.
  • #5 Rapid City Post 22 defeated #8 Harrisburg Maroon 14 to 4
  • #6 Renner defeated #7 Aberdeen 8 to 2.
  • Both Harrisburg Maroon and Aberdeen were eliminated from the tournament.

  • #4 Brookings Post 74 vs #6 Renner Post 307 at 10:00 AM, pregame at 9:30.
  • #3 Yankton Post 12 vs #5 Rapid City Post 22 at 5:00 PM, pregame at 4:30.
  • #1 Sioux Falls East vs #2 Harrisburg Gold at 7:30 PM, pregame at 7:00.

            The Yankton Post 12 Junior Legion baseball team open the Junior State Tournament in Harrisburg this afternoon with a matchup against Brookings Post 74 at 2:30 PM.

            Yankton is guaranteed three pool play games during the tournament, as they are in the “Stripes” pool, alongside Brookings, Rapid City Post 22, and Sioux Falls Post 15 East. The other four teams involved in this year’s tournament are Watertown Post 17, Renner Post 307, Brandon Valley Post 131, and Harrisburg Gold Post 45, as they will compete in the “Stars” pool.

            The top two teams from each pool will meet in a single elimination bracket on Sunday to crown a state champion.

            Yankton native Hannah Nelson will make her international Para Swimming debut for Team USA next week, as she will compete in the 2023 Para Swimming World Championships in Manchester, England.

            Nelson had her left leg amputated below the knee when she was eleven, due to osteosarcoma. Nelson, who had swam competitively for a few years before her amputation, returned to the water in the summer of 2017 and has since set multiple records for her age group and classification.

            The 2023 Para Swimming World Championships take place from July 31st through August 6th. Nelson will compete in the 400m freestyle S10 on August 2nd.

            The Summit League announced their Commissioner’s List for the 2022-23 academic year yesterday, and both the University of South Dakota, and South Dakota State University registered over 120 selections to the list.

            SDSU led the league in overall selections as 120 student-athletes combined for 132 total selections. USD had nearly as many honorees as 114 Coyote student-athletes combined for 122 total selections. The Coyote women’s basketball, men’s swimming & diving, and women’s tennis also earned team achievement awards, while the Jackrabbit women’s golf and softball teams received the same award for SDSU.

            To be selected to the Commissioner’s list, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, have used a year of eligibility during the 2022-23 athletics season and completed either three full semesters or five quarters at their institution.
