LOCAL SPORTS 6-19-23

The Yankton Post 12 Legion baseball team split their pool play games on Saturday against Aberdeen and Lee’s Summit, as they ended the Dakota Classic with a 2 and 2 record.

            Yankton fell to Aberdeen in a 1 to 0 matchup as Aberdeen’s Phillip Zens threw a complete game and allowed only one hit, handing Yankton their first loss to an in-state opponent this season. In their other game, Yankton would defeat Lee’s Summit 8 to 6, as Lucas Kampshoff went 3 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI.

            Yankton Post 12 now hold a 14 and 3 record on the year, as they prepare to host defending state champions Rapid City Post 22 in a double header tomorrow afternoon. Coverage of both games will be provided on KYNT and KYNTV beginning at 3:30 PM.

            The Yankton Girls Softball Association concluded their Father’s Day weekend tournament yesterday, as all three Yankton 18u softball squads took part in the event.,

Yankton Fury Red and Fury Black both ended pool play with 2 and 1 records, while Fury Fire moved into Sunday’s single elimination bracket 0, 2, and 1, as they had a game called while tied in pool play.

During yesterday’s championship bracket, both Fury Fire and Fury Black would be eliminated in the opening round, while Fury Red advanced to the semi-finals before falling to Wayne. The tournament would eventually be won by The Impact 18u team from Rapid City.

Yankton track and field athletes Tierney Faulk and Dylan Payer competed in the Nike Outdoor Nationals over the weekend, held in Eugene, Oregon.

Faulk, a recent Yankton High School graduate, took 5th place in the girls long jump, while also recording an 18th place finish in the 400 meter hurdles, and a 15th place finish in the triple jump.

Payer ended the event with a pair of top-6 finishes, as he took 6th in the mile run, and 3rd in the 800 meter, posting a time of one minute and 55.09 seconds

In the fall, Tierney Faulk will continue her track and field career at the University of Sioux Falls, while Dylan Payer is entering his senior year at YHS.

South Central Baseball League Results from last night:

  • Yankton defeated Menno 10 to 3. Joe Gokie (Go-Key) led the charge as he launched a pair of home runs.
  • Freeman handed Lesterville their second loss of the season, as they took a 3 to 2 victory. Freeman’s win puts them back at a .500 record on the year.
  • Crofton edged out Wynot 3 to 2. Seth Wiebelhaus scored two of the three runs for the Bluejays.

The next South Central League games will be held on Thursday:

  • Tabor will host Wynot.
  • Freeman will travel to Crofton.
  • Lesterville will be on the road against Menno.
