LOCAL SPORTS 6-15-23

The Yankton Post 12 Legion baseball team will open the Dakota Classic tomorrow in Sioux Falls, as they’re slated to play Bennington and Aberdeen on day one of the tournament.

            Also in Yankton’s group are Shakopee and Lee’s Summit, who they will meet on Saturday. Each pool champion will gain an automatic spot in the championship bracket, along with one wildcard team to round out the field.

            Yankton’s games will take place at Ronken Field on the campus of Augustana University in Sioux Falls. First pitch of their opening game is scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday morning.

            The first South Dakota amateur baseball poll of the year has been released, and the Yankton Tappers sit 5th in the class A standings.

            The Tappers have started the 2023 season with a 4 and 2 record, and will be in action again this evening as they’ll be on the road against Freeman.

South Central Baseball League schedule for this evening:

  • Yankton will travel for a meeting with Freeman
  • Tabor will host Lesterville, as Lesterville look to remain undefeated on the year.

            University of South Dakota track and field athlete Carly Haring was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship yesterday, as she became the 34th Coyote student-athlete to earn the honor.

Haring earned one of 126 scholarships that are distributed each year by the NCAA across all sports and divisions. She has also announced that she will continue her education at USD, as she will complete her schooling through the Sanford School of Medicine.

Outside of the classroom, Haring was a five-time all-Summit League honoree in the women’s high jump and won the Summit League outdoor high jump conference championship as a sophomore.
