LOCAL SPORTS 6-7-23

The Yankton Gazelles golf team wrapped up the class AA state tournament yesterday with a 7th place team finish, led by Ellia Homstad who finished tied for 13th.

            Homstad shot an overall score of 158, tying her with Maddie Childs of Mitchell. Also for the Gazelles, Elsie Larson tied for 34th, Gracie Brockberg and Sabrina Krajewski (Kra-ski) finished tied for 46th, and Madison Ryken ended the tournament 68th.

            Bryn Huber of Huron won the individual state title following a one hole shootout, while the Mitchell Kernels took the team championship, as they shot 616 as a unit.

In other area golf news, The Vermillion Tanagers girls team took 2nd place in the Class A state tournament, led by top-10 finishers Stephanie Carr, who ended the event in 4th, and Georgia Johnson who tied for 9th.

            The Yankton Post 12 Legion Baseball team outscored Watertown 30 to 4 yesterday, as they swept a double header between the two teams.

            Yankton took game one 11 and 2 as they tallied 16 hits as a team. Josh Sheldon got the win on the mound, striking out 8 batters over six and two thirds innings of work. Game two ended 19 to 2 in favor of Yankton. Mac Ryken pitched the complete 5-inning game en route to the victory. Lucas Kampshoff and Matthew Sheldon led the way at the plate in both games, as they each tallied 6 RBIs during the double header.

            Yankton, now 9 and 1 on the year, will travel to Mitchell tomorrow for a meeting with Post 18 at 2:00 PM.

            Yankton Fury Red softball opened their season yesterday with a two game sweep over Sanford Sports Academy White out of Sioux Falls.

            Yankton shut out Sioux Falls 8 to 0 in game one, 6 of those runs driven in by Elle Feser, as she doubled and hit a home run in the game. Game two ended in a 16 to 8 win for Yankton, as Regan Garry was credited for the victory on the mound.

            Yankton Fury Red will next compete in the Extra Innings Invitational in Sioux Falls, beginning on Saturday.

            The Yankton Fury Black softball squad will be in action tomorrow, as they travel to Wayne, Nebraska for a double header against the Dirt Devils. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
