The third place game in the Class B state tournament that ended in a 70-65 overtime victory for Aberdeen Christian over White River has been clouded in controversy following a late game scoring error that has been admitted and acknowledged by the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

The scoring error occurred in the third quarter and gave Aberdeen Christian an extra point, cutting the White River lead to 31-27. By rule, the scoring error should have been discussed at the next dead ball, which occurred just over 30 seconds after the mistake was made, but the discussion wasn’t had until later in the game. SDHSAA Executive Director Dan Swartos said “If there’s a dispute and the dispute can’t be resolved by rule, the referee is supposed to accept the official scorer’s book.”  Swartos added the game’s final decision would not be overturned, and Aberdeen Christian would retain their 3rd place spot with White River in 4th.

Swartos further stated “It was a mistake and it shouldn’t have happened,” as well as “We feel terrible about it. At this point there’s really nothing we can do about it, other than make sure we put things in place so that it doesn’t happen again.”
