The Class AA boys state basketball tournament begins on Thursday at The Monument in Rapid City, and the Yankton Bucks are guaranteed to play three games during the tournament.

            Yankton will meet Sioux Falls Washington in round one, with the winner of this game facing either #1 Sioux Falls Jefferson or #8  Harrisburg in the semifinals, while the loser will move into the consolation bracket.

            Tip off for the Bucks opening round matchup is set for 2:45 PM Thursday. Coverage on KYNT will begin at 2:15, Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

            The Mount Marty Lancers Baseball team improved to (17-4) over the weekend as they secured a (3-1) series victory over Mayville State University.

            The Lancers won game one 16-7, game two 4-2, and game four 2-1, with the third game in the series ending in a 4-1 loss for Mount Marty.

            The Lancers will open up their GPAC season next weekend with a series against the Briar Cliff Chargers that will take place in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday and Yankton on Sunday. Game one of the series will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, with the Lancers home opener scheduled for 1:00 PM on Sunday.

The Mount Marty Lancers softball team are (7-8) on the year after winning two of their three games in McPherson, Kansas over the weekend.

            MMU defeated Mayville State 6-0 and fell to Evangel 10-2 on Friday, while securing an 11-6 victory over Tabor College on Saturday.

            In track and field news, Yankton Bucks athlete Dylan Payer competed at the Nike Indoor Nationals over the weekend. Payer earned two top ten finishes during the event, finishing 6th out of 36 runners in the Emerging Elite boys mile run, and 10th out of 36 in the 1500 meter run. Payer also competed in the 800 meter run, finishing 23rd out of 57 runners in the event.

            The Nebraska high school boys basketball state tournament wrapped up over the weekend, with two area teams earning top-3 finishes in their class.

            In Class C2, The Cedar Catholic Trojans secured a 57-48 victory over Tri County in the 3rd place game. The Trojans end their season with a (24-5) record

            In Class D2, The Wynot Blue Devils finished as the runners-up following a 52-49 loss to Parkview Christian in the title game. The Blue Devils end their season with a (24-5) record.

South Dakota High School Girls Basketball State Tournament Results (Saturday/Final):

In Class AA:

  • #1 Sioux Falls Washington defeated #2 Pierre 54-36 to win the state title. Pierre finished as runners-up
  • #4 Sioux Falls Jefferson defeated #6 Harrisburg 55-34 in the 3rd place game. Jefferson finished 3rd in the tournament with Harrisburg in 4th
  • #3 O’Gorman topped #5 Mitchell 70-33 in the 5th place game. O’Gorman finished the tournament in 5th with Mitchell in 6th
  • #7 Rapid City Stevens defeated #8 Watertown 53-51 in the 7th place game. Stevens finished 7th in the tournament with Watertown in 8th

In Class A:

  • #1 Hamlin outlasted #2 Wagner 58-55 to win the state title. Wagner finished as the runners-up.
  • #6 Sisseton defeated #4 Red Cloud 55-47 in the 3rd place game. Sisseton finished the tournament in 3rd with Red Cloud in 4th.
  • #3 Sioux Falls Christian beat #8 Flandreau 46-43 in the 5th place game. SF Christian finished the tournament in 5th place with Flandreau in 6th.
  • #7 Rapid City Christian topped #5 Lakota Tech 66-52 in the 7th place game. RC Christian finished 7th in the tournament with Lakota Tech in 8th.

In Class B:

  • #3 Viborg-Hurley defeated #5 Wall 71-61 to win the state title. Wall finished the tournament as runners-up.
  • #1 Wolsey-Wessington beat #2 Ethan 60-55 in the 3rd place game. Wolsey-Wessington finished 3rd in the tournament with Ethan in 4th.
  • #7 Castlewood topped #8 Jones County 48-43 in the 5th place game. Castlewood finished the tournament in 5th with Jones County in 6th.
  • #6 Howard defeated #4 Sully Buttes 54-44 in the 7th place game. Howard finished the tournament in 7th with Sully Buttes in 8th.
