LOCAL SPORTS 3-3-23

Yesterday was the opening day of the 2023 NAIA indoor track and field championships, and multiple Mount Marty Lancers were in action.

            Both Mason Schleis and Seth Wiebelhaus competed in the men’s heptathlon. With a few legs of the event still remaining, Schleis is currently in 3rd place with 2,793 points, while Wiebelhaus is in 8th with 2,594 points. The men’s heptathlon will resume at 10:00 AM this morning.

            In the men’s and women’s 4×400 meter relays, the Mount Marty men would finish 17th in the prelims with a time of 3:20.52, while the women would be penalized and have their time disqualified in their heat.

            In action today for the Lancers: Schleis and Wiebelhaus will resume the men’s heptathlon at 10:00 AM. Ashinee George will compete in the women’s 60m hurdles at 12:35 PM. Jonathan Fuselier will take part in the men’s 60m hurdles at 12:50 PM. Calli Davis will run in the women’s 400m at 1:05 PM. Donovan Breckenridge will run in the men’s 400m at 1:25 PM and the men’s 200m at 5:00 PM. Nathan Simons will compete in the men’s 600m at 2:05 PM. Marcus Jnoffin will race in the men’s 60m at 2:35 PM. Finally, in the women’s pole vault, Grace Rippen will compete at 3:00 PM.

All track events are prelims today for the Lancers, while Rippen will take part in the prelims and finals for the pole vault this afternoon. All events will take place at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings.

The Yankton Bucks Basketball team will host the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles in the Class AA SoDak 16 tomorrow afternoon inside the Summit Activities Center.

The winner of this game will move on to the state tournament in Rapid City, pregame coverage on KYNT and KYNTV will begin at 1:30 PM with tipoff at 2:00. Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

The Mount Marty Lancers softball team is in Wichita, Kansas today for a double header against York University at noon, and Avila University at 4:00 PM. The Lancers will also play a pair of games tomorrow as they meet Avila again at 10:00 AM, and MidAmerican Nazarene University at 2:00.

The Mount Marty Lancers baseball team will be in action tomorrow as they will be in Atchison, Kansas for a double header against Benedictine College. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM noon

The 2023 men’s and women’s basketball Summit League tournament officially begins today, and both of the USD and SDSU programs will look to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning a conference title.

            The Coyote women are a 4 seed in the tournament and will meet #5 Oral Roberts on Sunday at 12:30. The #6 USD men will also play on Sunday as they will meet the #3 NDSU Bison at 8:30 PM.

The top seeded SDSU women are undefeated in conference play this season, and they will meet either St. Thomas or Western Illinois at 12:30 PM tomorrow afternoon. The Jackrabbit men are the #2 seed and will play either Kansas City or Omaha tomorrow evening at 8:30 PM.

The South Dakota high school boys basketball regional semifinals for many schools across classes A and B take place this evening, and multiple area teams will look to advance to the regional finals.

In Class A region 4, the #7 seed Vermillion will travel to #3 Elk Point Jefferson for their game at 7:00 PM this evening.

            In Class B region 4, #3 seeded Irene-Wakonda will face #2 Freeman Academy-Marion at 7:00 PM tonight.

            Also in Class B region 4, #5 Scotland will square off with #1 Viborg-Hurley in the semi final round at 7:00 PM tonight.

            The opening round of the Nebraska high school girls basketball playoffs is in the books, as three area teams have advanced to the semifinals.

In Class D1, #3 seeded Cedar Catholic defeated Johnson-Brock 69-36 on Wednesday. They will meet the top seeded Centura this morning at 10:45 AM. Coverage on Riverfront Sports 94.3 will begin at 10:15.

In Class C2, top seeded Crofton defeated #8 Cross County 49-27 yesterday morning. They will meet Oakland-Craig this afternoon at 1:30 PM. Pregame coverage on Riverfront Sports 94.3 is set for 1:00 PM

In Class D2, # 6 seeded Wynot upset #3 St. Mary’s 53-44 late last night. They will now face the #2 seeded Shelton at 7:45 PM tonight.

All of today’s games will be held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
