LOCAL SPORTS 1-31-23

The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles will face off with Aberdeen Central tonight in a pair Class AA basketball matchups. The Gazelles will be at home to host Aberdeen at 5:30 PM this evening, while the Bucks will be in Aberdeen for their date with the Golden Eagles. Coverage for the Bucks game will be available on KYNT and KYNTV starting at 5:00 PM, with tipoff set for 5:30. Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

            The South Dakota class AA polls for boys and girls basketball have been released, and the Yankton Bucks have fallen out of the rankings after being 5th last week. Yankton are the first team on the outside of the rankings, receiving the most votes of any team not in the top 5. The updated rankings are:

  2. Sioux Falls Lincoln (10-1)
  3. Mitchell (9-2)
  4. Brandon Valley (8-4)
  5. Pierre (8-5)

            The Mount Marty Lancers men’s and women’s basketball teams will be in action tomorrow night as they travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on the Briar Cliff Chargers. The women will tip off at 6:00 PM Wednesday evening with the men to follow. Coverage for both games can be found on KYNT beginning at 5:30, Tehl Tanner will be on the call.

            The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles wrestling squads will hit the mats tonight as they travel to Vermillion for a triangular against the Tanagers and the Dakota Valley Panthers. Matches are set to begin at 5:00 PM tonight at the Vermillion High School.

            The South Dakota Coyotes men’s basketball team took the trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma last night to take on the top team in the Summit League, Oral Roberts. The Yotes would fall 103 to 53 as Oral Roberts remained undefeated in conference play. Next up for the USD men is a home matchup with North Dakota State Thursday night at 7:00 PM. The USD women will also play NDSU on Thursday, as their game in Fargo will also be at 7:00 on Thursday night.

            The South Dakota State men’s basketball team took the hardwood last night as they traveled to Kansas City to take on the Roos. The Jacks would take a slim victory back to Brookings as they defeated Kansas City 67 to 66. Next up for the SDSU men is a home meeting with the North Dakota Fightin’ Hawks in Brookings on Thursday. The SDSU women will be on the road in Grand Forks on Thursday as they have a road matchup with North Dakota. Both games are set to tip off at 7:00 PM Thursday evening.

            Three members of the USD women’s triathlon team have been honored for their academics from the College Triathlon Coaches Association (CTCA) and USA Triathlon. Seniors Ella Kubas and Cass Dalbec were recognized as Division I Scholar All-Americans, and Sophomore Kayla Ribbink received an honorable mention. This is the first honor for Ribbink and Dalbec, while Kubas was recognized for the 4th consecutive year.

            The South Dakota Coyotes Volleyball team announced a new addition to their coaching staff late last week, as Abby Saehler has been named an assistant volleyball coach for the program. Prior to joining the Coyotes, Saehler served in a similar role at Grand Canyon University. When asked her thoughts on joining the program, Saehler said, “I am thrilled to be joining the USD volleyball program and the USD athletic department. This program has made some tremendous growth over the last few seasons and I look forward to continuing that success in the years to come.”

A cross country runner from Hartington-Newcastle has earned an award and major recognition following his senior season. Wildcat Carson Noecker has been named the 2022-23 Gatorade Nebraska Boys’ Cross Country Player of the Year. The award was given to Noecker based on his success not only in his athletics, but in the classroom as well. Noecker is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Player of the Year, with the winner being announced in February.

  • Irene-Wakonda fell to Wagner 71 to 28
  • Bloomfield lost to Wynot 49 to 32

In Boys Basketball:

  • Avon were beaten by Colome 59 to 52
  • Bon Homme topped Corsica-Stickney 51 to 46
  • Gayville-Volin were defeated by Mitchell Christian 65 to 56
  • Irene-Wakonda were victorious over Wagner 56 to 44

            The Yankton Quarterback Club will host their weekly meeting tomorrow at noon at JoDeans in Yankton. The featured guest speakers will be YHS wrestling coach Riley Smith, and Yankton Gymnastics coach Justin Olson.
